Kirorero is a remote washing station located near Lake Kivu, tucked into the steep walls of the Gasuma Valley at lake level. Reaching the station is not easy; after a long drive along the lake, access often continues by boat. Because there is no direct road connection, coffee cherries arrive by boat, on foot, or by bicycle from surrounding communities including Gisiza, Remera, Kinunga, Buhoro, and Nkira.
The station serves smallholder producers from the Boneza and Musasa areas, with a significant number of women farmers contributing to its production. Growers are organised through two first-tier cooperatives, KOTWI-BAKABO and COPROCUCAMU, and the station is operated by COOPAC — Cooperative pour la Promotion des Activités Café.
Kirorero is a beautiful example of coffee shaped by both landscape and community. Once the coffee is processed, it must be consolidated and transported back across Lake Kivu by boat to Nyamyenda washing station, before continuing by truck to the main access point. This extra journey makes Kirorero’s production more challenging, but it also gives the coffee a strong sense of place — remote, careful, and deeply connected to the lake.
Kirorero is more than just a washing station. It is a place where difficult access, volcanic landscape, lake transport, and cooperative farming all come together to create a coffee with a meaningful story behind it.
