Founded in 2006 by brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo, Daye Bensa is one of Ethiopia’s leading coffee growers and exporters. Their coffees come from both their own farm in Shantawene Village and a network of dedicated out-growers (smallholders) across Shantawene, Karamo, and Bombe.
Shantawene sits in the Bensa District, on the edge of the Harenna Forest along the western slope of Mount Batu—a high-altitude landscape that supports slow cherry maturation and vibrant cup character. The Daye Bensa farms range from 1,900–2,217m, while many out-grower cherries are grown even higher, around 2,000–2,400m. Cherries are delivered to the nearest of Daye Bensa’s 15 small washing stations spread across three districts.
In recognition of its quality, Shantawene placed 7th (from 1,400+ entries) in the Ethiopia Cup of Excellence 2020. Daye Bensa also invests heavily in its community: each year they host an Out-Growers Day, bringing together close to 1,000 farmers to celebrate the harvest, distribute second payments, and award premiums to top-performing producers. Looking ahead, Daye Bensa aims to expand support—especially for women farmers—and collaborate with Hawassa University to advance research and further elevate coffee quality.
