This coffee comes from Muyanda, a smallholder-growing community on the slopes of Mt Elgon in eastern Uganda, near the city of Mbale. Mt Elgon is an ancient volcanic mountain on the border of Uganda and Kenya, and its fertile volcanic soils, high elevation and cool mountain climate provide an ideal environment for growing distinctive Arabica coffee. The area’s slow ripening conditions help develop sweetness and complexity in the cup.

The coffee is produced by local smallholder farming families and processed at the Muyanda Wet Mill by Zukuka Bora Coffee Company. Zukuka Bora is a Ugandan-led social enterprise that works directly with coffee-growing communities across Mt Elgon. Its model goes beyond buying coffee: it invests in farmer training, equipment, processing infrastructure and longer-term income opportunities, helping farmers receive better value for their harvest and build more sustainable livelihoods.

For this washed lot, ripe coffee cherries are selectively harvested and delivered to the Muyanda Wet Mill. The fruit is removed, the parchment coffee is washed to create clarity and structure, and then carefully dried before milling and export. This process highlights the clean, sweet and balanced character of coffee from the region.

In the cup, this coffee is warm, juicy and comforting. Expect notes of stewed apple, red currant and brown sugar, with a gentle fruit acidity and a rounded caramel-like sweetness. The finish is soft and lingering, making it a beautifully approachable expression of Uganda’s Mt Elgon coffee landscape.
