In the highlands of Tetu, in Kenya’s Nyeri County, the story of Thageini begins with a community of coffee farmers determined to shape their own future. Once part of the Aguthi Farmers’ Cooperative Society, they established Thageini Farmers CBO as an independent, farmer-led organisation. Their ambition was to build a closer connection between the people who grow the coffee and those who drink it, while bringing greater value back to their community.

Today, the organisation represents more than 450 farmers. Coffee grows here at elevations of 1,700–1,800 metres, rooted in the region’s red volcanic soils. By managing their own wet mill and processing, the farmers have greater control over how their harvest is handled—and how their work is represented in the final cup.

That spirit of independence also guides their approach to processing. Under wet mill manager Robert Githitho, and through collaboration with Project Origin, Thageini has developed its distinctive Super Natural process. Carefully controlled fermentation takes place within the whole coffee cherry, followed by 25–30 days of slow drying on African raised beds. It is a patient approach, giving the team time to develop the fruit character and sweetness that have become a signature of Thageini’s coffees.

In this lot, that character takes the form of dried longan, sultanas, and brown sugar. The mellow sweetness of dried longan opens into richer dried-fruit notes, with sultanas adding depth and a gentle brown sugar sweetness tying the cup together. The overall impression is warm, rounded, and comforting, with a lingering sweetness that invites another sip.

For Thageini, quality is about more than a cup score. It is also about traceability, direct relationships with buyers, and the opportunity to return more value to the farmers behind each harvest. This coffee carries that story: a community taking ownership of its craft, combining Kenya’s coffee-growing heritage with the confidence to explore something new.
