Banko Gotiti: A Distinctive Coffee Community in the Gedeo Zone
Banko Gotiti is a village located in the Gedeb district of Ethiopia's Gedeo Zone, an area renowned for its proximity to the legendary Yirgacheffe coffee-growing region. The Banko Gotiti cooperative was established in 2012, forming its own identity after separating from the larger Worka cooperative. Today, it is madeup of approximately 300 members who cultivate a range of heirloom Ethiopian coffee varieties. Coffee in Ethiopia is typically grown on small, diversified family plots. Most farmers in this region grow other crops alongside coffee and lack access to chemical fertilizers or pesticides, resulting in naturally organic practices. After harvest, producers deliver ripe coffee cherries to nearby washing stations or centralized processing facilities. There, the cherries are sorted, weighed, and either paid for on the spot or issued a receipt. Washing stations handle coffee from hundreds-sometimes over a thousand—of smallholder farmers throughout the harvest season. Cherries are combined into daily lots, which makes it difficult to trace any single coffee back to an individual producer. However, we work closely with trusted export partners to source coffee from the same washing stations each year, maintaining consistency and traceability as much as possible. In this region, most coffees are processed using the washed or natural method and dried on raised beds. Yirgacheffe coffees, in particular, have gained global recognition for their complex flavor profiles-often marked by a distinct blueberry note. The region's thick vegetation, shaped by a warm tropical climate with balanced wet and dry seasons, supports high-altitude coffee farming from 1,600 to 2,400 meters above sea level. The area's diverse microclimates lend unique character to each lot, with individual washing stations playing a key role in shaping flavor and quality.
