Kevote is the name of a wet mill in Embu with three facilities that serve almost 2600 small-holder farmers throughout the Embu region. Located in the foothills of Mount Kenya, this is a region in which 80% of households work in agriculture with hundreds of cooperatives for coffee processing. The region produces approximately 600,000kg of coffee per year.  Most coffee farmers in Kenya own between 1/8-1/4 hectare of land, meaning that they deliver their coffee to processing stations where their coffee is sorted and combined with others in the area for processing as a day-lot.

You might notice the uniformity in these beans. They are kind of chubby, rounded and smaller than normal coffee beans! This is a classic peaberry and is sorted out at the mill by size. A peaberry is a natural occurrence in coffee cherries whereby just 1 seed instead of two matures inside the fruit. Given the mill is receiving coffee from such a large number of individual farmers the peaberry is not traceable based on it’s varietal but is a combination of the varietals within the region; Batian, SL28, SL34 and Ruiru 11.

We are very fortunate to have been able to source this coffee through our friends at Cafe Imports who consistently secure some of the best coffee that Australia has to offer. Great sourcing makes roasting that much easier and enjoyable. In the cup we have been finding a sparkling acidity with notes of blackberries, finger lime and caramel.
